American Freestyle Karate is a mixture of many different styles of martial arts, including Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan Karate, American Boxing, Aikido, and Philippine martial arts. "Karate" means "empty hand" so in American Freestyle Karate, much emphasis is put on using the hands and feet equally in defensive applications.
We start with a solid foundation of basic blocks, strikes, punches and kicks and then build those into self defense techniques against a punch, escapes from all types of grabs, defenses from knives and guns, katas (a choreographed sequence of techniques), light contact sparring, and more.
In martial arts, the term freestyle means to be well-rounded. It is toward this end that we incorporate the use of traditional weaponry at AFK Staunton. We include many weapons in our curriculum, such as nunchucks, bo staff, kamas, sword, escrima sticks, sais and tonfas.
But here at American Freestyle Karate Staunton, we do more than punching and kicking. Our motto is “Respect Everyone” and this motto affects everything we do. We encourage our students to set goals, such as earning the rank of Black Belt, and achieve them through hard work and self discipline.
